Peking University

'There is only one Beida' is a phrase often heard in China, referring to the term the Chinese use for Peking Univer-sity. The University is China's oldest and most prestigious, and is internationally recognized as the leading institute of higher education in the country. Established in 1898, the university has a total enrolment of over 46,000 students, with just under 2,000 international students.
Its outstanding international reputation is based on a wide range of achievements, many in the natural sciences. In 1965 it synthesized Bovine Insulin artificially for the first time in the world. In the early 1970s it developed the first MFLOPS IC computer in China, and in the 1990s, atomic weight of Indium measured by a Peking University academic was adopted by the International Atomic Energy Agency as the international standard.

The China Center for Economic Research (CCER)

The collaboration between Peking University and LSE is being organised by CCER.
Founded in 1994, this economic 'think tank' has the largest concentration of Western trained PhDs in Economics in the whole of China. CCER's mission is to mobilize domestic and international resources in order to bring together a group of well trained economists to foster economic reform and development in China and to contribute to the develop-ment of modern economic theory.
In the short time since its founding, CCER has already distinguished itself through its achievements in economics educ-ation, theoretical research and policy implementation. Currently several CCER members advise at the most senior leve-ls, both in the private and public sector on economic policy and the environment.
CCER is located in a restored prince's villa at Peking University, whose extensive and beautiful campus is a model classical Chinese garden. Situated on a small island on the north edge of the campus, this villa now houses CCER with its offices, high-class executive level classrooms and library.
